About this book

When software can choose the next step, call tools, carry context across interactions, cross system boundaries and act on behalf of the enterprise, who owns that execution?

IAM owns identity. Data owns authoritative sources. Integration owns APIs. Security owns policy. Product teams own outcomes. Cloud teams own infrastructure. Yet an agent can move through all of them in a single task. That is the management problem at the heart of this book.

A company does not need an AI Platform Team simply because it has many AI projects. The real trigger is the shape of delegated authority. Nor should the team become another centralised AI factory. The book introduces the Execution Control Surface: the shared layer connecting agent identity, models, context, tools, policy, evaluation, observability, intervention, evidence and economics, while leaving authoritative responsibilities where they already belong.

Deliberately unconventional ideas

  • Reskill before you replace. Institutional knowledge of your systems, controls and failure history may be worth more than a new population of AI specialists.
  • Design capabilities before job titles. Titles will keep changing; what the enterprise must be able to do is durable.
  • Operate three health planes, not one: Platform-Service Health, Agent-Execution Health and Business-Outcome Health.
  • Turn field delivery into organisational learning through a Field-to-Platform Learning Loop.
  • Fund successful work, not AI activity. Token spend and agent counts can rise while value falls.
  • A mature platform team learns what to stop owning. Centralisation is not the destination.

Five organisational conditions (Chaos, Consolidation, Platform, Governed Agentic Scale and Autonomous Enterprise) help decide what the centre should build, keep, delegate and eventually stop owning.

Who it’s for
